Towel Volleyball Partner Toss
Each pair holds a towel by its ends and uses it to catch and launch a foam ball over the net into the other side. Students work on teamwork, timing with a partner and reading the ball's path.
How to play
- Set up 3 courts about 20 x 30 ft with the net at about 6.5 ft. Make pairs and give each pair a beach towel; two or three pairs per side (3 min).
- Practice for 3 minutes: launch the ball upward by pulling the towel tight together, then catch it without letting it drop.
- Game: the serving pair puts the ball on the towel and launches it over the net. The other team must catch it with a towel before it hits the floor.
- The ball may be passed to another pair on the same side before going back over. Score if the ball lands on the other side or goes out. Games to 7 (10 min).
- Switch opponents and play 3 minutes with two balls at once. Clean up and discuss: how did you agree on when to launch? (1 min).
Rules
- The ball is touched only with the towel, never with hands.
- Both partners hold the towel at all times.
- Safety: run watching the ball and call "Ours!" to avoid running into another pair.
Variations
Easier
Allow one bounce on the floor before catching the ball with the towel.
Standard
Catch with no bounce and one pass allowed between pairs on the same side.
Harder
A pass to another pair is required before the ball goes back over the net.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: the pair takes a fixed zone near the net while teammates cover the back.
- Autism or shyness: a stable teacher-chosen partner and an agreed count ("one, two, go!") for launching.
- Fitness level: a bigger, lighter ball or a shorter court.
Learning goals
- Coordinate movement with a partner to launch and catch.
- Move as a pair toward where the ball will land.
- Communicate with the team to cover the court.
Equipment for a class of 25
- towels: 13
- foam balls: 6
- net: 3
Teacher tip
Ask students to bring old towels from home or use large fabric pieces from the gym. The usual mistake is only one partner pulling; have them count out loud and stretch the towel together.
