Three-Legged Race
A classic field-day race where two partners tie their ankles together with a scarf and move as if they had three legs. Students work on coordinating with someone else, finding a shared rhythm and communicating.
How to play
- Make pairs of similar height. Each pair ties one partner's right ankle to the other's left ankle with a scarf, not too tight, and holds each other around the waist or shoulders.
- Learning (4 min): partners walk calling "middle" (tied leg) and "outside" (free legs). Walk first, then speed up.
- Mark a 50 ft course with cones. Race in waves of 4 or 5 pairs to the cone and back (5 min, several starts).
- If a pair falls or comes untied, they stop, retie and keep going. Nobody is out.
- Final challenge (4 min): a course with a cone slalom and a turn, then a four-legged trio with a student in the middle tied to both sides.
- Finish with 1 minute for each pair to share which word or trick helped them stay in sync.
Rules
- Tie the scarf at the ankle, never the knee, and not too tight.
- Speed-walk or jog lightly, no sprinting.
- If you stumble, stop in place before continuing.
- Safety: leave at least 6 ft between pairs at the start line.
Variations
Easier
Walk untied, just holding each other's waist and stepping together.
Standard
Ankles tied with a scarf and a 50 ft course there and back.
Harder
Trios or groups of four tied together on a course with turns and walking backward.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: partners connect by both holding a dowel and move side by side, one walking and one in a wheelchair.
- Visual impairment: the sighted partner guides with voice and a hand on the waist, counting each step.
- Shyness: the teacher pairs the student with a trusted classmate so the contact feels comfortable.
Learning goals
- Coordinate your steps with a partner's.
- Use simple words and rhythms to move together.
- Take part in a traditional field-day game and laugh off the stumbles.
Equipment for a class of 25
- scarves: 13
- cones: 12
Teacher tip
Calling "middle, outside" out loud is the trick that works best. Pair by height and check every knot before each start.
