The Streamer Bridge Between Us
In pairs, each child holds one end of a streamer strip, and together they walk, crouch, turn and raise and lower their arms without tearing the paper. It builds adjusting force and distance, and cooperating with a partner.
How to play
- The teacher and a child hold a streamer by the ends and show what happens if one pulls hard: rip! Then how to walk with it slack (2 min).
- In pairs, keeping the streamer a little slack, we walk together around the room following the drum (2 min).
- We lift the streamer up high, lower it to the floor and crouch without letting go (2 min).
- We circle around our partner, duck under the streamer like a bridge, or sit down and stand up together (3 min).
- The whole class makes a chain: pairs join with more streamers and we take a slow lap without tearing any (3 min).
Rules
- If my friend moves away, I move closer.
- The streamer stays loose, smiling down at the floor.
- If it tears, no big deal: grab another and keep going.
Variations
Easier
For 3-year-olds, use a short piece doubled up (two streamers together) and only walk and crouch.
Standard
For 4-year-olds, add lifting, lowering and turning.
Harder
For 5-year-olds, make the whole-class chain and try ducking under another pair's bridge.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: the partner in a wheelchair sets the path and the other adjusts the distance.
- Visual impairment: use a fabric ribbon instead of a streamer so the child can feel whether it's tight or loose.
- Less skill: instead of pinching the streamer, tape it to a stick or cardboard tube.
Learning goals
- Adjust how hard to grip and pull.
- Keep the right distance from a moving partner.
- Cooperate toward a shared goal.
Equipment for a class of 25
- serpentinas de papel: 30
- pandero: 1
Teacher tip
Cut strips a little over three feet long and keep plenty of spares: they'll tear at first and that's part of learning. Remind kids to watch their partner, not the paper.
