The Pose Dice
Taking turns, one child rolls a giant die with six poses stuck on it (cat, dog, cobra, butterfly, tree and mountain) and the whole group does whichever comes up. They review the poses they've learned and make choices about how to do them.
How to play
- In a circle, the teacher shows the die: each side has a pose card, and we all do each one to remember it (3 min).
- One child rolls the die across the middle of the circle and names the pose that comes up (1 min).
- Everyone does the pose and holds it while we count to five together (2 min).
- Keep rolling in turns; whoever rolls picks if the pose is done fast or slow, big or small (4 min).
- Last roll: whatever comes up is the goodbye pose, and we do it with our eyes closed (2 min).
Rules
- We roll the die along the floor, not through the air.
- I wait for my turn sitting in the circle.
- We all do the pose that comes up, even if it's not my favorite.
Variations
Easier
For 3-year-olds, the die has only three poses, each twice, and the teacher does them with the kids.
Standard
For 4-year-olds, six different poses and the roller chooses how to do it.
Harder
For 5-year-olds, roll two dice (one with poses, one with dots) and hold the pose for as many seconds as the dots show.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: push the die from the chair; each pose has a seated version agreed on beforehand.
- Visual impairment: cards have a different texture (button, yarn, sandpaper) and the child next to them names the pose.
- Autism: the child has a strip with all six poses and points to the one that came up before doing it.
Learning goals
- Recall and reproduce known poses.
- Make small choices about how to do a pose.
- Take turns.
Equipment for a class of 25
- dado grande de gomaespuma: 1
- tarjetas de posturas: 6
Teacher tip
A foam die with clear pockets lets you swap the cards as you learn new poses. Have the roller name the pose: that's how they learn the vocabulary.
