The Playground Fountain: One Drinks, Others Wait
We go on a pretend hike around the playground with stops at a make-believe drinking fountain, where we learn to wait while one person drinks; at the end we drink for real from our bottles. It builds steady walking and jogging, healthy hydration and waiting at shared spots.
How to play
- The teacher says we're going on a hike and there's a fountain with just one tap (a cone) on the way. She shows how to drink: cupped hands and 'glug, glug' while counting to three (1 min).
- Hike around the playground following the teacher: uphill (big steps), over rocks (tiptoes), across a stream (little hops) (3 min).
- Reach the fountain: one child drinks while counting to three and the others wait behind the line whispering 'So thirsty, so thirsty!' (2 min).
- There are four fountains around the playground: jog freely and, at each one, drink if it's free or wait if someone's there (3 min).
- Return to the start and drink from our real water bottles, sitting down and sipping slowly (3 min).
Rules
- One person drinks at a time.
- I wait behind the line without pushing.
- I drink to the count of three and make room for the next person.
- Everyone drinks from their own bottle.
Variations
Easier
For 3-year-olds, use one fountain with the teacher there and a short hike.
Standard
For 4-year-olds, use four fountains and free jogging between them.
Harder
For 5-year-olds, each fountain has a rotating 'tap keeper' who turns the pretend tap on and off for the next child.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: put the fountain somewhere accessible and route their hike on smooth ground.
- Autism: mark the waiting spot with a footprint and show 'count to three' on fingers.
- Visual impairment: hang a bell on each fountain and use a rope line they can feel with a foot.
Learning goals
- Keep moving steadily at a moderate pace.
- Build the habit of drinking water after exercise.
- Wait for a turn at a shared resource.
Equipment for a class of 25
- Cones: 4
- Each child's water bottle: 25
Teacher tip
It's ideal on hot days and ties in nicely with the school's real fountain. Ask families to send a labeled bottle, and keep spare cups for anyone who forgets.
