The Magic Ribbon Wand
In pairs, one child is the wizard who draws a magic circle over their partner with a ribbon wand while calling out an animal; the partner transforms and moves like that animal until the drum sounds. It builds animal imitation, decision-making and respect for a partner.
How to play
- The teacher is the wizard: draws a circle over the class with the ribbon and says, "Abracadabra, frogs!" and everyone hops like frogs (2 min).
- We try several animals with the teacher: slithering snakes, cats on all fours, flying birds (2 min).
- In pairs: the wizard draws the circle over their friend without touching them and names an animal; the friend transforms (3 min).
- One drum tap: the spell is broken! Switch roles (3 min).
- Final spell: all the wizards turn the whole class into sleeping statues and we lie down (2 min).
Rules
- The wand draws above my friend, never near their face.
- The wizard picks animals we can do safely.
- When the drum sounds, the spell ends.
Variations
Easier
For 3-year-olds, only the teacher is the wizard and picks familiar animals.
Standard
For 4-year-olds, play in pairs with any animals.
Harder
For 5-year-olds, the wizard adds what the animal is like: "sleepy cat," "speedy horse," "grumpy elephant."
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: the child in a wheelchair can be a wizard full of ideas or transform using arms, head and sounds.
- Hearing impairment: the wizard shows a picture card of the animal or acts it out with a gesture.
- Autism: give the wizard a choice of four animals on picture cards.
Learning goals
- Act out animals with different ways of moving.
- Make decisions and offer ideas to a partner.
- Respect a partner's body and space.
Equipment for a class of 25
- cintas de tela con palito: 25
- pandero: 1
Teacher tip
Teach the "above the head" circle gesture clearly before starting: the ribbon never goes toward faces. Keep animal ideas handy for wizards who draw a blank.
