The Little Roll That Tumbles Off the Plate
Lying along the bench like a little roll on a plate, kids turn sideways and tumble gently onto the crash mat pushed right up against the bench. It builds rolling along the length of the body and letting go of the fear of a controlled fall.
How to play
- The teacher pushes a crash mat right up against the long side of each bench, almost the same height, with thin mats all around (2 min).
- We do log rolls on the floor mats: arms stretched over our heads and body straight (2 min).
- We lie face up on the bench, an adult beside us, and slowly turn toward the crash mat until we roll onto it (3 min).
- We try starting face down and turning the other way, always toward the crash mat (2 min).
- The chef (the teacher) calls "Roll onto the plate!" and each child chooses how to lie down before rolling; once on the mat, we keep rolling to the end (3 min).
Rules
- We only roll toward the crash mat side.
- Arms stretched or tucked by your sides: no hands underneath.
- One chef per bench: wait until the roll before you is off the mat.
Variations
Easier
For 3-year-olds, sit on the bench and tip sideways onto the mat, with an adult's hand on the back.
Standard
For 4-year-olds, face up and face down.
Harder
For 5-year-olds, follow the fall with two more rolls along the mat and stand up without hands.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: an adult helps them turn off the bench, or they roll only on the crash mat on the floor.
- Visual impairment: before rolling, they touch the crash mat with a hand and the adult says "Go!" when it's clear.
- Autism: if the fall feels scary, they do only the floor rolls and watch the others up close.
Learning goals
- Roll around the long axis of the body.
- Let the body fall in a controlled way onto a soft surface.
- Manage the small fear of falling.
Equipment for a class of 25
- banco sueco: 2
- colchoneta gruesa: 2
- colchonetas: 4
Teacher tip
The crash mat must touch the bench, with no gap where an arm could get caught. Watch for kids rolling the wrong way, which is the usual mistake at first.
