The Jumpers' Obstacle Course
An obstacle course that brings together all the jumps we've learned: hoops to jump in and out of, ropes to jump over, a zigzag of cones, and a low step for jumping onto a mat. Children go through it several times, each at their own pace.
How to play
- Walk the course with the teacher, who shows which jump goes where (3 min).
- First round jumping, one after another with space between (4 min).
- Second and third rounds: try to do it more softly, like ninjas (5 min).
- Each child picks a favorite part and shows it to the group (3 min).
- Take the course down together; the adult moves the bench (2 min).
Rules
- I start once the child ahead has finished the hoops.
- At the step, I jump only when the mat is clear.
- I don't pass anyone.
- If a part is hard, I can walk through it.
Variations
Easier
At age 3, a short course (hoops, ropes, and mat) with a very low step.
Standard
At age 4, the full course with two-footed jumps.
Harder
At age 5, one-foot hops through the hoops and a jump from the step to a mark on the mat.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: a parallel course with cones to go around and hoops to touch from the wheelchair.
- Autism: photos of each station in order and always the same direction around the course.
- Visual impairment: a buddy guides, and each station has a sound (hoops that rattle, a clap at the step).
Learning goals
- Combine different kinds of jumps.
- Follow a course.
- Jump down from a small height safely.
Equipment for a class of 25
- hoops: 8
- jump ropes: 6
- low bench or step: 1
- gym mats: 2
- cones: 6
Teacher tip
Put the step at the end of the course and stand there yourself. Make sure the whole course is visible from the start so kids understand the route.
