The Hoop Spinning Top
Children spin a hoop upright on the floor like a spinning top, and when it falls flat and stops, they jump inside. Children practice hand coordination, visual tracking and patience when it doesn't work the first time.
How to play
- The teacher shows how: hoop upright, both hands on one side, and a quick twist like opening a jar (2 min).
- Everyone tries to spin their top; we count together how many seconds it keeps spinning (3 min).
- When the top falls with a "plop," jump inside with both feet (2 min).
- While it spins, dance around it like a party; when it falls, freeze (2 min).
- Spinning top festival: everyone spins at once and we watch them dance around the room (2 min).
- Gather the tops and lay them flat in the pile (1 min).
Rules
- My top spins in my spot, away from friends.
- I wait for it to fall before I jump in.
- If it won't spin, I try again: we all get it little by little!
- I don't step on someone else's top.
Variations
Easier
For 3-year-olds, the teacher spins the hoops and children jump in when they fall.
Standard
For 4-year-olds, each child spins their own and jumps in when it falls.
Harder
For 5-year-olds, spin the hoop and turn all the way around before it falls.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: spins the hoop on a table or on the floor beside them and puts a hand inside when it falls.
- Autism: warn them about the "plop" sound and give them a quiet corner with their top.
- Less skilled children: lighter hoops on a smooth floor spin with little effort.
Learning goals
- Spin a hoop using a wrist twist.
- Track a spinning object and react when it stops.
- Keep trying even when it doesn't work right away.
Equipment for a class of 25
- Hoops: 25
Teacher tip
This works much better on a smooth floor (classroom or court) than on dirt. Celebrate every spin, even a one-second one: this game gets frustrating if you're chasing the perfect top.
