The Hoop on the Wall Bars
We hang hoops on the wall bars a little above the children's heads and throw big balls through them, like a real basket. It works on shooting upward with two hands, taking turns and getting rebounds.
How to play
- The teacher ties hoops to the wall bars at about their own chest height and draws a chalk shooting line in front of each basket (2 min).
- Demonstration: knees slightly bent, ball in front of the face, and we stretch our whole body toward the hoop (2 min).
- In groups of three per basket: one shoots, one gets the rebound and hands it to the next, and we rotate (5 min).
- We try shooting from the right and the left of the hoop, not just from the front (3 min).
- Together we untie the hoops and sit down to share what was the most fun (2 min).
Rules
- I shoot from the chalk line.
- The rebounder waits for the ball to come down.
- One shoots, then the next: everyone shoots lots of times.
- Nobody climbs the wall bars.
Variations
Easier
For 3-year-olds, very low hoops at the child's head height and light, well-inflated beach balls.
Standard
For 4-year-olds, hoops a hand-span above the head and shooting from the line.
Harder
For 5-year-olds, higher hoops and shooting after one bounce, like in a real game.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: tie a lower hoop at wheelchair height to shoot from sitting.
- Hearing impairment: the rebounder raises a hand to show "you can shoot now".
- Less skill: a lighter ball and shooting from closer, with no line.
Learning goals
- Throw upward with two hands, stretching the whole body.
- Cooperate in shooter and rebounder roles.
- Respect short turns.
Equipment for a class of 25
- Hoops: 4
- Large rubber balls: 12
- Rope: 4
- Chalk: 1
Teacher tip
Tie the hoops at two points so they do not swing, and check the wall bars are anchored. The typical mistake is shooting from right under the hoop; a chalk line one step back helps them see the arc.
