The Hiding Beat
The teacher keeps a beat on the hand drum and children follow with claps; suddenly the drum hides and children must keep the beat on their own until it comes back. Children practice holding a steady beat inside.

How to play
- Sitting down, everyone softly pats their knees at the same time as the drum, at a calm pace (2 min).
- The teacher hides the drum behind their back while still playing softly, and children keep patting (2 min).
- Now the drum goes completely silent for a few beats and children keep going alone; when it returns, we check if we were together (3 min).
- Do it standing and walking: the beat hides and we keep walking the same way until it comes back (2 min).
- End with the heartbeat: hands on chest and calm breathing (1 min).
Rules
- Keep the beat even when it's quiet.
- Don't rush: same as before.
- When the drum comes back, listen to check if we're together.
Variations
Easier
For 3-year-olds, the drum only hides behind the teacher's back but keeps playing softly.
Standard
For 4-year-olds, the drum goes silent for four beats and then returns.
Harder
For 5-year-olds, the drum stays silent longer, then do it while walking.
Adaptations
- Hearing impairment: also show the beat with a hand moving up and down that hides just like the sound.
- Limited mobility: do the whole activity sitting, with claps or taps on the wheelchair.
- Less skilled children: sit next to the adult, who keeps a gentle beat by tapping their shoulder.
Learning goals
- Keep a steady beat without sound support.
- Coordinate claps or steps with the group.
- Build careful listening.

Teacher tip
It's normal for them to speed up when the drum goes quiet; don't correct it with words, the drum comes back and resets them. Choose a calm walking beat, slower than you think.
