The Giant Leaf Spiral
Together the class builds a giant leaf spiral on the ground: each child runs for a leaf, comes back, and places it on the line, and at the end everyone dances along it. It's moving, temporary art that combines running, teamwork, and expression.
How to play
- The teacher chalks a big spiral on the ground and everyone walks it in to the center and back out (2 min).
- The leaf baskets are far away: run, grab one leaf, and come back to place it on the line, starting from the center (4 min).
- Keep bringing leaves, traveling in different ways: tiptoe, hopping, or sideways (3 min).
- Everyone steps back to look at our artwork from far away and say what it looks like (1 min).
- Travel along the outside of the spiral like a snail, slowly at first, then faster, then slow again (3 min).
- To finish, the wind blows: on the teacher's signal, we break up the spiral by sweeping the leaves up with our arms (2 min).
Rules
- One leaf per trip.
- I place it on the line, next to the last one.
- I don't step on the spiral until the teacher says so.
- The artwork belongs to everyone.
Variations
Easier
For 3-year-olds, a small spiral or just a circle, with shorter trips.
Standard
For 4-year-olds, the big spiral and different ways of traveling.
Harder
For 5-year-olds, alternate colors: one light leaf, one dark leaf, all the way around.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: bring a basket close to the spiral and put the child in charge of placing the center leaves.
- Autism: give the child a section of the spiral marked in a different chalk color so it's clear where their leaves go.
- Visual impairment: also lay a thick rope along the spiral so it can be traced by hand.
Learning goals
- Run toward a goal and come back with control.
- Create a group artwork with natural materials.
- Enjoy the process more than the result.
Equipment for a class of 25
- dry leaves
- baskets: 3
- chalk: 2
Teacher tip
If it's windy, anchor the center with a large rock or choose a sheltered corner. Snap a photo of the spiral before it's swept away and show it back in class.
