The Farmer Gathers Eggs and Plants Seeds
Children spend the morning with the farmer: they gather eggs (balls) from the henhouse without breaking them, carry them along a narrow path (ropes), then plant the garden and grow like plants. It builds balance, careful handling and the sequence of a farm task.
How to play
- The teacher, as the farmer, says the hens have laid eggs all over the yard (balls scattered around) (1 min).
- Each child takes a basket and gathers eggs by squatting slowly, one at a time, so they don’t break (3 min).
- The path to the house: walk along a rope on the floor holding the basket without dropping an egg, then leave them in the kitchen (3 min).
- Planting: squat and drop seeds (beanbags) into the rows (parallel ropes), stepping sideways along the row (3 min).
- Rain and sun: children turn into the plants, grow up from the ground and wave their leaves in the wind (2 min).
- The farmer harvests: with a gentle tap, each plant sits down and rests (2 min).
Rules
- We pick up eggs gently, one at a time.
- On the rope path, I go slowly.
- Each seed goes in its row.
Variations
Easier
For 3-year-olds, the rope makes a wide zigzag and one foot can step off.
Standard
For 4-year-olds, a straight rope and the basket in one hand.
Harder
For 5-year-olds, carry the basket on your head or the egg on a big plastic spoon, and plant five seeds per row, counting.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: put eggs on a table at the child’s height and make the path a lane between two ropes for the wheelchair.
- Visual impairment: use sound balls, and follow the rope with the foot.
- Autism: preview the three jobs (eggs, path, planting) with real objects in a box.
Learning goals
- Handle objects gently.
- Keep balance while carrying something.
- Learn about farm work.
Equipment for a class of 25
- Foam balls: 40
- Baskets: 12
- Ropes: 8
- Beanbags: 30
Teacher tip
Use foam balls, never small plastic eggs. Any child can be the farmer in the second round. Kids usually step off the rope while staring at the basket; tell them to look at the end of the path.
