The Colorful Egg Hunt
At a spring celebration, children search for colorful eggs (balls) hidden around the playground and bring them to the nest of the matching color, first hopping like bunnies, then balancing them on an open palm, and finally in pairs. It works spatial awareness, searching and carrying with care.
How to play
- While the children face the wall covering their eyes, the teacher hides the balls around the playground and sets a basket of each color in the middle as nests (2 min).
- Hop like bunnies to find an egg, bring it to the nest of its color and go back for another (4 min).
- Hide them again; this time carry the egg on an open palm, without closing your hand, walking carefully so it doesn’t fall (3 min).
- Partner eggs: in pairs, find an egg and carry it between both partners’ hands to its nest (3 min).
- Sit around the nests and count the eggs of each color together (2 min).
Rules
- One egg at a time.
- Each egg goes in the nest of its color.
- If I see two eggs, I leave one for a friend.
Variations
Easier
For 3-year-olds, eggs are in plain sight, close by, and any nest is fine.
Standard
For 4-year-olds, eggs are half hidden and go to the matching color nest.
Harder
For 5-year-olds, the teacher gives location clues (“near something green,” “under something”) and eggs are carried on a big wooden spoon.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: hide some eggs at the child’s height along their route, and they carry eggs on their lap.
- Visual impairment: use eggs with a bell inside or with textures, and a buddy says “warmer” or “colder.”
- Autism: show photos of the possible hiding spots beforehand so the search doesn’t feel overwhelming.
Learning goals
- Find their way around the space while searching.
- Carry an object carefully in different ways.
- Sort by color during play.
Equipment for a class of 25
- Colored balls: 40
- Colored baskets: 4
Teacher tip
Use ball-pit balls or bigger, never small plastic eggs. Count how many you hide so you know none are left behind in the playground.
