The Color Harvest Passes Hand to Hand
The whole class sits in a long line and passes the harvest fruit (colored balls) hand to hand from the tree to the market, where each one goes into the basket of its color. The challenge is to bring in the whole harvest before the song ends, practicing controlled passing, colors and cooperation.
How to play
- Sit sideways in a line, shoulder to shoulder, with the box of balls (the tree) at the start and four colored baskets (the market) at the end (2 min).
- The teacher shows how to pass the fruit with two hands, twisting the trunk: “From the tree to the market without dropping it” (1 min).
- First harvest, slowly: the first child takes a fruit and passes it; the last child puts it in the matching basket and says the color out loud (3 min).
- The song plays: can we get the whole harvest to the market before it ends? (2 min).
- Change the way we pass: over our heads, to one side and then the other, and move the harvest back to the tree (3 min).
- Count the fruit in each basket together and celebrate a full market (1 min).
Rules
- I pass the fruit with two hands.
- I wait until my friend is holding it before I let go.
- If it falls, I pick it up and it keeps going.
- The last friend helps put each fruit in its basket.
Variations
Easier
For 3-year-olds, use only two colors and big balls; the teacher helps the child at the end.
Standard
For 4-year-olds, four colors with the song as the timer, as described.
Harder
For 5-year-olds, two fruits travel at once and the last child changes each round so everyone sorts.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: the child sits in their wheelchair in the line, with others raised to the same height on cushions.
- Autism: a fixed spot in the line with a little space beside it, and always the same song.
- Visual impairment: balls with a different texture for each color and the same texture taped to the matching basket.
Learning goals
- Pass objects to a classmate with control.
- Sort by color.
- Cooperate in a chain to reach a shared goal.
Equipment for a class of 25
- Colored balls: 30
- Baskets: 4
- Large box: 1
- Music
Teacher tip
Use orange-sized balls that are easy to hold with both hands. Kids often pass several at once and drop them, so start with “one fruit, one trip.”
