The Chestnut That Rolls to the Hoop
In small groups with an adult right there, children roll large chestnuts along the ground so they stop inside a hoop. It builds accuracy, control of force, and safe handling of natural materials.
How to play
- The teacher counts the chestnuts out loud with the group and reminds everyone they never go in mouths (1 min).
- Kneeling, roll a chestnut by hand to a partner, who stops it with an open hand (3 min).
- Roll it to the nearby hoop: if it stops inside, say "Into the hedgehog's basket!" (3 min).
- Move the hoop a little farther and try rolling harder or softer (3 min).
- Change position: roll from a frog squat (2 min).
- Collect all the chestnuts and count them again together before putting them away (2 min).
Rules
- Chestnuts roll on the ground, not through the air.
- I never put a chestnut in my mouth.
- I wait my turn to roll.
- When we finish, we count them all.
Variations
Easier
For 3-year-olds, use large pine cones instead of chestnuts; they roll less smoothly but can't fit in a mouth, and the hoop is very close.
Standard
For 4-year-olds, large chestnuts with the adult right next to the group, and hoops near and far.
Harder
For 5-year-olds, roll the chestnut through a two-stick gate before it reaches the hoop.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: roll the chestnut from the wheelchair down a gutter or a tilted piece of bark.
- Visual impairment: swap the hoop for a box with a rim, and a buddy claps to show where it is.
- If any child still mouths objects, play with pine cones or fabric balls instead of chestnuts.
Learning goals
- Roll an object accurately toward a target.
- Control hand force.
- Learn to play safely with natural materials.
Equipment for a class of 25
- large chestnuts: 20
- hoops: 6
- baskets: 3
Teacher tip
Use only very large chestnuts and count them at the start and the end; keep groups to 4-5 children per adult. If anyone in the group still chews on objects, switch to pine cones, no question.
