The Castle Drawbridge
Knights cross the castle bridge (a gym bench) one at a time, and the bridge only lowers for the next knight once the one before has arrived. It builds waiting for a turn calmly and crossing with balance.

How to play
- Build the castle: the gym bench is the bridge over the moat, with mats beside it and at the end, and the teacher holds a rope at the entrance like a chain (2 min).
- Explain: the bridge only comes down (rope to the floor) for one knight; the rest wait sitting in the courtyard line (1 min).
- Each knight walks across the bench; stepping onto the mat they shout "Castle!" and the bridge comes down for the next one (4 min).
- While they wait, the line cheers with soft claps and says the name of whoever is crossing (3 min).
- New ways to cross: sideways, crawling, or with arms out wide (3 min).
- Everyone's inside: raise the bridge and take a bow (1 min).
Rules
- Only one knight fits on the bridge.
- We wait sitting down until the chain comes down.
- If you step off, climb back on where you were, no rush.
Variations
Easier
For 3-year-olds, the teacher holds hands as needed, and use a low bench or a line on the floor.
Standard
For 4-year-olds, they cross alone walking forward and sideways.
Harder
For 5-year-olds, they crawl across or carry a beanbag on the head, and a child guards the chain.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: cross a rope bridge on the floor next to the bench or with adult support, keeping the same turn.
- Visual impairment: an adult walks alongside the bench and the guard says "bridge down!" when it's their turn.
- Autism: post the line order with photos or names on the wall so the child knows when their turn is coming.
Learning goals
- Wait for a turn without cutting ahead.
- Cross a bench with balance.
- Cheer on classmates while waiting.
Equipment for a class of 25
- Gym bench: 1
- Mats: 2
- Rope: 1
Teacher tip
If the line is long, set up two bridges with an adult at each: waits over two minutes feel endless. An adult always stays beside the bench.
