The Box Rides Between Two Tummies
In pairs, children hold a box squeezed between them without using hands, with tummies, backs, or sides, and carry it to a cone and back. It builds partner coordination, step matching, and communication.
How to play
- The teacher and a child show how to hold a box between two tummies, hands behind backs (1 min).
- In pairs we try holding the box while standing still, then taking little side steps (2 min).
- We carry the box tummy to tummy to the cone and back; if it drops, we fix it with our hands and keep going (3 min).
- Switch: now back to back, then shoulder to shoulder (3 min).
- Partners pick their favorite way and show the rest of the class (2 min).
- We sit with the box between us and say thanks with a high five (1 min).
Rules
- While the box travels, no hands.
- Before walking, we say “Let's go!” together.
- If it drops, it's nobody's fault: we fix it and keep going.
- We move at our partner's pace.
Variations
Easier
For 3-year-olds, a big squishy box (with a cushion inside) between tummies and only short side steps.
Standard
For 4-year-olds, there and back to the cone, and three ways to hold it.
Harder
For 5-year-olds, a zigzag route and carrying two boxes at once: one between tummies and one between hips.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: hold the box between the child's arm and the arm of a classmate walking alongside, or between the wheelchair and the classmate.
- Autism: if close contact feels uncomfortable, carry the box between both children's outstretched open palms for more distance.
- Visual impairment: the partner narrates the moves (“To the right,” “Stopping”) and they always travel in a straight line.
Learning goals
- Coordinate movement with a partner.
- Adjust body pressure to hold an object.
- Communicate to move together.
Equipment for a class of 25
- Medium cardboard boxes: 13
- Cones: 6
Teacher tip
Pairs of similar height work best. If everyone keeps dropping their box, switch to bigger boxes: more contact surface makes it easier.
