The Ball Wheel Spins Around the Circle
Sitting in a circle, children pass several balls at once hand to hand to the beat of the music, like a spinning wheel. The class challenge is for every ball to go all the way around and back to its owner before the song ends, practicing passing and catching, rhythm and shared attention.
How to play
- Sitting in a circle, the teacher hands out one ball and chants “Take it, pass it, spin the wheel”; we pass to the beat, always in the same direction (2 min).
- Add another ball on the opposite side of the circle: two balls spin at once without catching up to each other (2 min).
- Six children spread around the circle are “owners” of a ball; each ball must go all the way around and back to its owner before the song ends (2 min).
- When the teacher says “Switch!”, all the balls change direction at once (2 min).
- Try once more with the full song, and if all the balls make it home, we do a wave with our arms to celebrate (2 min).
Rules
- I catch with two hands and pass to my neighbor.
- We hand balls over, we don't throw them.
- If I have two balls, I pass one and then the other.
- We all follow the beat of the song together.
Variations
Easier
For 3-year-olds, one big ball and a small circle (8–10 kids).
Standard
For 4-year-olds, two to four balls and direction changes, as described.
Harder
For 5-year-olds, six balls, direction changes and passing behind the back.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: set the circle at wheelchair height, with classmates seated on chairs too.
- Autism: use balls with no sounds or lights, and if it gets overwhelming, the child keeps one ball that stays put.
- Visual impairment: use brightly colored balls and have the neighbor say “Here!” when passing.
Learning goals
- Pass and catch with control several times in a row.
- Match movement to the rhythm of a song.
- Keep attention on a shared task.
Equipment for a class of 25
- Balls: 6

Teacher tip
The song can be very simple, with a clear beat for every pass. Balls tend to pile up on one child, so the teacher sits beside that child and helps them pass.
