The Ball Rolls Down the Sand Track
In small teams, kids build a sand mountain in the sandbox with a spiral or zigzag groove and roll a tennis ball down it without it falling out. It builds planning of a simple project, cooperation, and fine motor skills in the hands.
How to play
- The teacher shows a damp sand mountain with a groove and drops a ball from the top: it rolls down on its own! (2 min).
- In teams of four, we water the sand so it sticks and pile it up with shovels into a mountain (4 min).
- With a finger or the edge of our hand, we carve the groove from the top to the bottom, with a curve or two (3 min).
- We test the ball: if it falls out, we fix the groove's edge together and try again (3 min).
- Each team member releases the ball once while the others wait at the bottom to catch it (2 min).
- We visit other teams' tracks, try their ball, and cheer for their work (2 min).
Rules
- We all build the same mountain.
- If the ball falls out, we fix it without getting upset.
- Everyone waits their turn to release it.
- We wet the sand with the watering can, not by splashing.
Variations
Easier
For 3-year-olds, the teacher builds the mountain and they just dig a straight groove and drop the ball.
Standard
For 4-year-olds, they build the mountain as a team with a groove that has one curve.
Harder
For 5-year-olds, the groove needs two curves and a short tunnel the ball rolls through.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: the team builds at the sandbox edge or on a sand table at their height.
- Autism: give a set role on the team (waterer or ball releaser) and show a photo of the finished mountain as a model.
- Visual impairment: use a ball with a bell inside to follow it by sound, and let them feel the groove by hand.
Learning goals
- Plan and build a simple project as a team.
- Shape sand with hand strength and precision.
- Accept mistakes and fix them together.
Equipment for a class of 25
- Tennis balls: 6
- Sand shovels: 12
- Watering can: 2
Teacher tip
Damp sand is the key: dry sand won't hold a shape. Keep the watering can close and water it yourself at first to show how much. With 3-year-olds, give them the mountain ready-made, or they'll get frustrated before they play.
