The Ants’ Narrow Trail
The ants carry their crumb (the ball) to the anthill along cone-and-rope trails that start wide and get narrower. It builds slow, precise dribbling and direction control.

How to play
- The teacher sets up three trails with two rows of cones or two ropes: wide, medium, and narrow, all leading to an anthill (a big hoop or chalk circle) (2 min).
- Ants on the wide trail: dribble the crumb without leaving the path (2 min).
- Medium trail: slower, tiny taps (2 min).
- Narrow trail: “Ant steps, ant taps” (3 min).
- Each ant picks the trail they want and makes two more trips (2 min).
- All crumbs in the anthill and the ants sit around it (1 min).
Rules
- The crumb stays on the trail.
- On the trail, one ant behind another, no pushing.
- If the crumb rolls out, I put it back and keep going.
Variations
Easier
Age 3: just the wide and medium trails; guiding the ball with a hand is fine if it escapes.
Standard
Age 4: all three trails.
Harder
Age 5: trails with a curve, trying the other foot.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: a wide, flat trail and a big ball pushed with a pool noodle.
- Visual impairment: thick ropes on the floor they can feel with the foot and a ball that makes sound.
- More skilled: the narrow trail with curves, using only the less-skilled foot.
Learning goals
- Dribble the ball precisely in a limited space.
- Adjust tap strength to the width of the path.
- Choose a challenge that fits their ability.
Equipment for a class of 25
- Soft balls: 25
- Cones: 24
- Ropes: 4
Teacher tip
Running several trails at once avoids lines. If there’s a jam, open another wide trail: long waits are what most often spoil this activity.
