The Animal Spa
The classroom becomes a spa for tired animals with four care stations: ball massage, sponge bath, feather tickles and nap time on the mat; in pairs, children rotate through all of them, taking turns as the animal and the caretaker. It works on relaxation, sense of touch and cooperation.
How to play
- The teacher introduces the spa and shows at each station what care is given and how to do it gently; put on calm music (2 min).
- In pairs, each child picks an animal (a lion, a giraffe, a penguin) and goes to their first station: one is the animal and the other the caretaker (3 min).
- At the sound of a triangle or a soft clap, animal and caretaker switch roles at the same station (3 min).
- Next signal: each pair moves to the next station, walking like their animal but very slowly (3 min).
- Keep rotating until every pair has visited all four stations, switching roles at each one (3 min).
- All the animals lie down together in the nap area and share their favorite treatment (1 min).
Rules
- At the spa we talk softly.
- I touch gently and ask if they like it.
- I change stations only at the signal.
- I leave the materials at the station for the next pair.
Variations
Easier
For 3-year-olds, use just two stations (ball and nap) and the teacher helps pairs who need it.
Standard
For 4-year-olds, all four stations as described.
Harder
For 5-year-olds, caretakers first ask "Do you want it soft or extra soft?" and do it that way.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: the nap station is adapted to their chair and care is given on the arms and back.
- Autism: they can be caretaker only or have care given to a stuffed animal; show the station order with pictures.
- Visual impairment: each station has a different texture on the floor so they can recognize it, and a classmate walks with them between stations.
Learning goals
- Relax through different kinds of touch.
- Care for a partner gently.
- Respect turns and signals.
Equipment for a class of 25
- Soft balls: 6
- Bath sponges: 6
- Large feathers: 6
- Mats: 4
- Music
Teacher tip
Set up the stations before kids arrive and label each with a big picture card (ball, sponge, feather, pillow). With a big class, put two pairs at each station; the real challenge is keeping the calm during rotations, so make the signal very soft.
