Tape Trails on the Classroom Floor
Using masking tape, the teacher makes a straight line, a zigzag, a wavy line and a snail spiral on the classroom floor, and children travel them in different ways: on tiptoe, on heels, sideways or heel-to-toe. With very little space, they work on balance, careful stepping and focus.
How to play
- Before class, the teacher tapes four trails on the floor: straight, zigzag, wavy and spiral (2 min).
- Walk each trail normally, always stepping on the tape, like tightrope walkers (2 min).
- Change the walk: tiptoe on the straight line, sideways on the zigzag and on heels on the wavy line (2 min).
- Snail: walk very slowly into the spiral to the center, then walk out backward (2 min).
- With arms out to the sides, then with a small cushion on the head, repeat your favorite trail (2 min).
- At the end, peel up the tape together, roll it into a ball and toss it in the trash (2 min).
Rules
- Your feet always step on the tape.
- If a foot slips off, put it back and keep going.
- Everyone goes the same direction on each trail, no passing.
Variations
Easier
For 3-year-olds, make two wide trails using two strips of tape, walking normally.
Standard
For 4-year-olds, use all four trails with different walks.
Harder
For 5-year-olds, walk heel-to-toe, and exit the snail backward without looking at your feet.
Adaptations
- Wheelchair users: follow a wide two-strip trail with the wheels.
- Visual impairment: tape a thin string under the tape so it can be felt with bare feet.
- Less balance: rest a hand on the shoulder of a buddy walking alongside.
Learning goals
- Travel accurately along a line.
- Keep balance with different ways of walking.
- Experience straight, zigzag and curved lines with the body.
Equipment for a class of 25
- Masking tape: 2
Teacher tip
Press the tape down well on smooth floors and remove it the same day so it doesn't leave marks. In a very small room, make just two trails and vary the walks.
