Syllable Match-Up Scramble
Each student holds a card with one syllable and moves around the blacktop to music using the locomotor skill the teacher calls. When the music stops, they must find the classmate whose syllable completes their word, so they practice locomotor skills, reading and mixing with different classmates.
How to play
- Hand each student a card with one syllable written large; two cards make words like ti-ger, pen-cil, ba-by or rab-bit, and prepare one three-syllable word, ba-na-na, if you have an odd number (2 min).
- The music plays and everyone travels the way the teacher calls: tiptoeing, sliding, jumping or bear crawling (1 min per song).
- When the music stops, each student looks for the partner who makes a word with their syllable. When they find each other, they sit down together and read the word out loud.
- Pairs check with the teacher; anyone who got it wrong goes back to searching with no penalty. The next song starts when everyone has a partner.
- After each round, students trade cards with someone holding a different syllable, and the locomotor skill changes (8 rounds, 10 min).
- Last round: pairs join into groups of four and make up a short sentence using both of their words (2 min).
Rules
- Hold your card so your syllable shows.
- When the music stops, walk, don't run, to find your partner.
- You can't pair up with the same classmate every time.
Variations
Easier
Use simple two-syllable words and draw a picture of the word next to each syllable.
Standard
Two-syllable words, some with blends, like plan-et or class-room, and a new locomotor skill every song.
Harder
Use three-syllable words to form trios, and syllables that can build more than one word.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: the student stays at a fixed spot and classmates come to check whether their syllable matches.
- Visual impairment: use very large raised letters made with glue or yarn, and a buddy who travels alongside.
- Reading level: give simpler syllables or picture-supported cards to students still learning to read, without pointing it out.
Learning goals
- Read syllables and blend them into words.
- Travel in different ways while matching the beat of the music.
- Connect with a different classmate every round.
Equipment for a class of 25
- cardstock: 26
- music: 1
Teacher tip
Laminate the cards or slip them into sheet protectors so they last, and pick words from the vocabulary the class is working on. Keep a list of the pairs handy so you can check matches at a glance.
