Student-Created Movement Stories
In groups, students invent a short movement story with four scenes and actions for the whole class, then narrate and lead it while classmates act it out. Students practice creativity, planning a movement task and leadership.
How to play
- Explain what a movement story is with a 2-minute example led by the teacher (3 min).
- Form 5 groups of 5 and give each a sheet of cardstock; they choose a setting (outer space, castle, ocean floor, city, desert) (2 min).
- Each group writes four scenes with one movement action each: a locomotor move, a jump or balance, a partner game and a calm ending (8 min).
- Each group decides who narrates each scene and practices voice and directions (2 min).
- Taking turns, each group leads its story for 3 minutes while the rest of the class acts it out (15 min).
Rules
- Story actions must be safe for everyone: no sprinting in small spaces and no climbing on objects.
- While a group narrates, everyone else follows the directions without changing them.
- Every group member narrates at least one scene.
- The teacher can pause any scene that looks unsafe.
Variations
Easier
The teacher provides the story outline and groups only invent the actions.
Standard
Each group invents a four-scene story and leads it.
Harder
Each story must include a music change and one scene where the class works together in groups of four.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: each group includes actions the student can do seated, or the student is the lead narrator.
- Shyness: the student can narrate by reading from the card or be in charge of the music.
- Hearing impairment: narrators pair directions with gestures and show the illustrated card.
Learning goals
- Plan a meaningful sequence of movement actions as a group.
- Lead classmates with clear directions.
- Act out stories created by others.
Equipment for a class of 25
- cardstock: 5
- markers: 10
Teacher tip
Check each card before the performances to fix unsafe or overly long actions. Save the best stories to use with younger grades.
