Straw Bubble Mountains
In small groups around a tub of water with a squirt of soap, children blow through straws to make bubbles, first gently and then harder, until they build a mountain of foam. It works on long, steady exhaling and sensory fun.
How to play
- The teacher explains the golden straw rule: only blow out, never sip; they practice by blowing on their palm first (2 min).
- In groups of four around each tub, they put the straw in the water and blow very gently: tiny bubbles come out, "like a sleepy fish" (2 min).
- Now they blow a little harder and longer: the water goes "glug-glug" and foam starts to rise (2 min).
- Everyone at the tub builds a foam mountain, blowing in turns and then all together (3 min).
- They touch the foam with their hands, blow it without the straw to make it fly, and dry off with the towel (2 min).
- Sitting by the tub, they breathe slowly while watching the mountain melt away (1 min).
Rules
- I only blow out through the straw; if I sip, it tastes like soap.
- My straw is just mine.
- I blow in my own tub without splashing others.
- When the teacher raises a hand, I take out my straw and listen.
Variations
Easier
For 3-year-olds, plain water with no soap and big cups instead of a tub, with an adult at each group.
Standard
For 4-year-olds, a squirt of soap and a group foam mountain.
Harder
For 5-year-olds, the teacher calls "mouse bubbles" (soft) or "whale bubbles" (strong) and they adjust their breath.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: place the tub on a table at wheelchair height.
- Autism: if getting wet is unpleasant, the child can blow without touching the water and just watch; offer gloves if wanted.
- Hearing impairment: a low hand (soft blowing) and a high hand (strong blowing) replace the words.
Learning goals
- Practice a long, steady exhale.
- Tell the difference between blowing and sipping.
- Enjoy a shared sensory experience.
Equipment for a class of 25
- Tubs: 6
- Straws: 25
- Mild liquid soap: 1
- Towels: 6
Teacher tip
Tip: snip a tiny hole near the top of each straw, so if someone sips, they get air instead of water. Use a tiny amount of mild, unscented hand soap.
