Soil Pails Across the Narrow Bridge
Each child carries half a pail of soil along a path of rope, low bench, and hoop stepping stones to the flower pots, trying not to spill. Kids work on dynamic balance while carrying weight in one hand.
How to play
- Walk the route together from the soil pile to the flower pots: a rope on the ground, a low bench, and hoops that are river stones (2 min).
- Each child fills half a pail and walks the rope heel to toe without spilling (2 min).
- Cross the low bench with the pail in one hand and the other arm out for balance; the teacher stands next to the bench (3 min).
- Step through the hoop stones one at a time and dump the pail into a flower pot (2 min).
- Change how you carry it: left hand, right hand, hugged to your tummy (2 min).
- Look together at how full the pots are and give the gardening team a round of applause (1 min).
Rules
- Pails are filled only halfway.
- One person on the bench at a time; wait until the friend ahead steps off.
- If some soil spills, that's okay: we'll sweep it up at the end.
Variations
Easier
For 3-year-olds, skip the bench and carry a nearly empty pail with both hands.
Standard
For 4-year-olds, do the full course carrying the pail in one hand.
Harder
For 5-year-olds, cross the bench sideways or carry two small pails, one in each hand.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: follow the route alongside the rope and bench with the pail on the lap, and dump it into a pot at lap height.
- Less balance: a buddy or the teacher holds the free hand on the bench.
- Visual impairment: use a thick rope that can be felt underfoot and give a verbal cue at each new section.
Learning goals
- Keep balance on narrow surfaces while carrying weight.
- Alternate hands when carrying.
- Complete a course with a real purpose for the garden.
Equipment for a class of 25
- Sand pails: 10
- Soil or sand
- Jump ropes: 2
- Low balance bench: 1
- Hula hoops: 6

Teacher tip
Set the bench on soft ground or with mats along the sides, and stay next to it the whole time. No garden? The "soil pile" can be the sandbox and the pots can be cardboard boxes.
