Socks Off, No Hands
Sitting on mats with shoes off, children take off their socks using only the other foot, grab them with their toes, and kick them into a basket. It builds foot coordination and strength and sticking with a simple challenge.
How to play
- Sitting on the mat with shoes off, pull your socks down a little with your hands so they're loose at the toes (1 min).
- Using the toes and heel of the other foot, push the sock until it comes off your right foot (2 min).
- Now do the same with the other foot (2 min).
- With the sock on the floor, grab it with your toes and lift it like a crane (2 min).
- Sitting in a circle with the basket in the middle, pick the sock up with your toes and kick it into the basket (2 min).
- Get your socks back and put them on, helping each other if needed (1 min).
Rules
- No hands until the teacher says so.
- Everyone uses their own socks.
- If it's hard, I keep trying or ask for a hint.
Variations
Easier
For 3-year-olds, leave the sock nearly off, and rubbing the foot against the mat to slide it off is fine.
Standard
For 4-year-olds, take it off with the other foot and pick it up with the toes.
Harder
For 5-year-olds, lie on your back and pass the sock from one foot to the other before kicking it into the basket.
Adaptations
- Limited leg mobility: the child does the challenge with their hands, taking a sock off a stuffed animal or their own hand one-handed.
- Autism or touch sensitivity: the child can play with a big sock pulled over their shoe or their own sock.
- Less coordination: an adult pulls the sock down to the toes, and we cheer when the last push gets it off.
Learning goals
- Coordinate both feet to solve a task.
- Strengthen the toes and soles of the feet.
- Keep trying until a simple motor challenge is done.

Teacher tip
Let families know ahead of time to send socks that slip off easily, without grips. The typical mistake is using hands without noticing, and a quick "Hands on tummies!" helps.
