Silent Color Islands
Children are little boats sailing the sea, and when the teacher waves a colored scarf, everyone runs to the island of that color without a word being said. They practice color recognition and running with changes of direction.
How to play
- We spread four islands around the playground: red, blue, green and yellow mats placed apart (1 min).
- We visit each island together and name it: fire island, sea island, jungle island and sun island (2 min).
- With music, we sail around like little boats; when the teacher waves a scarf, we all run to that island without talking (4 min).
- We change how we sail: crawling like turtles, leaping like dolphins or as a train with a friend (3 min).
- Last round: the teacher waves all four scarves and each child picks a favorite island to rest on (2 min).
Rules
- The teacher doesn't talk: watch the scarf.
- Everyone fits on the island; squeeze in gently.
- Look ahead when you run.
Variations
Easier
For 3-year-olds, use two islands and the teacher stands next to the island while waving the scarf.
Standard
For 4-year-olds, use four islands and the teacher waves from the middle.
Harder
For 5-year-olds, the islands move each round and sometimes the teacher flashes the scarf briefly and hides it.
Adaptations
- Child with limited mobility: closer islands and a buddy to go along.
- Child with low vision: large, high-contrast scarves, and each island also has a sound (bell, clap).
- Autistic child: may have a fixed home island to go back to if overwhelmed.
Learning goals
- Recognize colors without verbal cues.
- Run with changes of direction.
- Share a small space with classmates.
Equipment for a class of 25
- colchonetas de colores: 4
- telas de colores: 4
- música
Teacher tip
No colored mats? Large hoops or tablecloths work. Wave the scarf up high: kids at the back tend to follow their friends instead of the color.
