Shadow Theater Behind a Sheet
In groups, students create a one-minute silent scene and perform it behind a lit sheet, so the audience only sees shadows. Students practice creative movement, use of space and teamwork while building a performance.
How to play
- Hang the sheet between two posts or wall bars about 5 ft off the ground and set the lamp 10 ft behind it; dim the room and test shadows with the class (3 min).
- Explore together: moving toward the lamp makes a giant shadow, standing close to the sheet makes it sharp; a few volunteers try animal and object shapes (4 min).
- Form 5 groups of 5 and give each a theme: the monster, the boat trip, the circus, the storm or the robot (1 min).
- Each group plans a one-minute scene with a beginning, a problem and an ending, using only their bodies (7 min).
- Groups take turns performing behind the sheet while the rest sit in front and guess what is happening (8 min).
- Wrap-up: each group shares the shadow trick that worked best for them (2 min).
Rules
- Never look straight into the lamp or touch it: it gets hot.
- Tape the lamp cord to the floor and never step over it.
- Behind the sheet there is no talking; only gestures and shapes count.
- The audience watches each scene quietly and claps at the end.
Variations
Easier
Instead of scenes, each group makes three still shapes for the audience to guess.
Standard
Perform one-minute scenes with a beginning, a problem and an ending.
Harder
Add background music and have the scene changes match the changes in the song.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: the wheelchair becomes part of the shadow (a boat, a car) while the student makes shapes with arms and hands.
- Shyness: the student can join using only hands low on the sheet or be in charge of the lamp.
- Visual impairment: a partner quietly describes what is on the sheet, and the student performs behind it guided by touch.
Learning goals
- Tell a story without words using shapes and movement.
- Explore how distance changes the size and shape of a shadow.
- Build a group scene with a clear structure.
Equipment for a class of 25
- white bedsheet: 1
- spotlight or bright lamp: 1
Teacher tip
Test the setup before class: the sheet should be tight and the lamp at chest height. An LED light avoids heat, and you do not need total darkness; closing the blinds is enough.
