Scrunch the Rug and the Treasure Arrives
Sitting barefoot on a low chair or the floor, children scrunch a stretched-out towel with their toes until the treasure at the far end reaches their feet. It builds toe dexterity, patience, and linking what the foot does with what they see.

How to play
- Each child sits barefoot with a towel stretched out in front, a stuffed animal at the far end (1 min).
- The teacher shows how to “eat” the towel with the toes: spread the toes, grab, scrunch, and let go (2 min).
- Scrunch the towel bit by bit until the treasure reaches our feet (2 min).
- Use the other foot, after putting the treasure back at the far end (2 min).
- In reverse: use the toes to smooth the towel and send the treasure back (2 min).
- Hug the treasure and wiggle our toes to say goodbye (1 min).
Rules
- Only the toes do the work.
- Don’t touch the treasure until it reaches my feet.
- If I get tired, I rest and try again.
Variations
Easier
Age 3: a short towel, and pulling with the whole foot is fine.
Standard
Age 4: a regular towel, using the toes of each foot.
Harder
Age 5: a longer towel, a slightly heavier treasure, or standing while leaning on the wall.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: if the feet can’t be used, gather the towel with the fingers or by pulling a tied ribbon.
- Visual impairment: a treasure that makes sound and textured tape along the towel’s edge.
- Autism: the treasure is their favorite object, and the finish line is marked with a sticker on the towel.
Learning goals
- Build toe strength and dexterity.
- Stick with a slow task until it’s done.
- Connect foot movement with what happens to the towel.
Equipment for a class of 25
- Small towels: 25
- Stuffed animals or soft toys: 25
Teacher tip
Works best on a smooth floor with thin hand towels. Some kids start pulling with their hands; tuck the hands “to sleep” under the thighs.
