Sardines Hide-and-Seek
Hide-and-seek in reverse: one student hides and everyone else searches; anyone who finds the hider quietly squeezes into the hiding spot too, packed like sardines, until the whole group is together. Students practice focus, safe exploring, and cooperation with no one getting out.
How to play
- Mark which areas of the playground are allowed (covered areas, corners, behind benches or goals) and which are off-limits. Play in 2 groups of 12-13, each in one half of the area.
- In each group, one student in a pinnie hides while the others count out loud to 30 with eyes covered at the wall.
- Everyone searches on their own. A student who finds the hider doesn't say anything: they quietly squeeze into the hiding spot.
- The hiding spot keeps filling up. The round ends when the last seeker arrives or the whistle blows at 4 minutes (3 rounds, 12 min).
- A different student hides each round, chosen from the first ones to find the previous hider. 3-minute wrap-up to share the best hiding spots.
Rules
- No climbing trees, fences, or walls, and no leaving the marked areas.
- Search walking or jogging; no sprinting around corners.
- When you find the hider, join quietly and don't give the spot away.
- When the whistle blows, everyone returns to the meeting spot.
Variations
Easier
Play in a small area, and the hider claps once every 30 seconds.
Standard
Play in half the playground with 4-minute rounds.
Harder
Two students hide in different spots, and seekers choose which one to join.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: allowed hiding spots include accessible places, and the student may search with a partner.
- Visual impairment: search hand in hand with a partner who describes the places.
- Shyness or autism: the student can hide with a buddy the first time.
Learning goals
- Explore the space carefully and safely.
- Cooperate quietly to keep the group's hiding spot secret.
- Respect the boundaries and agreed rules.
Equipment for a class of 25
- whistle: 1
- pinnies: 2
Teacher tip
Walk the playground first and choose areas you can see. Stay at a central or high point and count students at the end of each round.
