Rope Drawings on the Floor
Each child moves their rope along the floor to the music, making snakes, waves, circles and swirls, then leaves a drawing for others to guess. Kids practice rhythm, arm coordination and expressing ideas with an object.
How to play
- Everyone takes their rope by one end and spreads out around the room on their knees (1 min).
- With slow music, we drag the rope along the floor, making a snake that moves slowly (2 min).
- With fast music, we make small, quick waves from side to side (2 min).
- Standing up, we swirl the rope in circles on the floor around us, first with one hand, then the other (3 min).
- We lay the rope on the floor as a picture (sun, house, wave...) and walk around guessing the others' pictures (3 min).
- We gather the rope by pulling it in very slowly, like slurping a noodle (1 min).
Rules
- The rope dances on the floor, never in the air.
- I keep space around me so I don't hit anyone.
- Slow music, slow moves; fast music, faster.
- I respect others' pictures and don't step on them.
Variations
Easier
For 3-year-olds, only the slow snake and fast waves, sitting down.
Standard
For 4-year-olds, all the shapes, kneeling and standing.
Harder
For 5-year-olds, in pairs, one makes a movement with the rope and the other copies it like a mirror.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: from the wheelchair, with a shorter rope, the child moves it across a table or the floor beside them.
- Hearing impairment: the teacher shows slow and fast with big gestures and a colored ribbon.
- Visual impairment: a classmate describes the pictures and the child traces them by hand.
Learning goals
- Move an object to the rhythm of music.
- Coordinate arm and wrist in different directions.
- Express ideas with shapes on the floor.
Equipment for a class of 25
- Jump ropes: 25
- Music
Teacher tip
Choose music with clear speed changes. Leave two arm lengths between kids: the rope extends their reach and it's easy to hit someone by accident.
