Rolling on the Big Cloud
Children roll sideways on top of the thick crash mat, which sinks and wobbles like a cloud, trying to reach the far end without rolling off. They practice body control while rolling on a soft, unsteady surface.
How to play
- Place the crash mat in the middle with regular mats around it on every side (1 min).
- First, climb on two at a time and crawl across the cloud to feel it sink (2 min).
- Taking turns, roll sideways from one end of the cloud to the other (3 min).
- Now roll two at a time, each on your own half, without bumping (3 min).
- As many as fit lie on their backs on the cloud and float (1 min).
Rules
- Two on the cloud at most.
- Roll lengthwise, away from the edge.
- If you roll off, you land on something soft; go back to the line.
Variations
Easier
For 3-year-olds, crawl and lie on the cloud, and roll just once or twice with the teacher beside them.
Standard
For 4-year-olds, roll from one end to the other.
Harder
For 5-year-olds, roll in pairs on separate halves without crossing over.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: lying on the cloud, an adult helps the child roll once and feel it sink.
- Autism: go up alone, with no partner, for the first few turns.
- Less skilled children: roll with the teacher's hand on the hip to guide direction.
Learning goals
- Roll on a soft surface while staying on course.
- Adjust balance as the mat sinks.
- Share the play space without bumping.
Equipment for a class of 25
- Thick crash mat: 1
- Mats: 6
Teacher tip
The surrounding mats are a must, since almost everyone rolls off a side at first. Rolling on the crash mat is more tiring than it looks, so keep turns short.
