Ringo Ring Toss over the Net
Net game from Poland in which a rubber ring is thrown and caught over the net, with no moving while holding it. Students practice throwing with a wrist flick, one-hand catching and finding open space on the other side.
How to play
- Set up 4 courts about 13 x 30 ft with a net or rope at about 6.5 ft and cones in the corners. Make pairs: two pairs per court and one pair of rotating referees (3 min).
- 3-minute partner practice: throw the ring flat with a wrist flick and catch it with one hand.
- 2v2 game: serve from the back line. Whoever catches the ring must throw it over the net from the same spot within 3 seconds, with no passing to a partner.
- Score when the ring lands on the other side, when the other team throws it out or catches it with two hands. 4-minute games, rotating opponents (12 min).
- Wrap up for 2 minutes: which throw was hardest to catch, high or low and flat?
Rules
- Catch and throw with one hand only.
- No steps while holding the ring.
- Safety: throw the ring flat and never at an opponent's face.
Variations
Easier
Allow two-hand catches and one step before throwing.
Standard
One-hand catch and throw from the spot.
Harder
Play with two rings at once, one served by each pair.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: a personal zone by the net where the ring is thrown slower and higher.
- Hearing impairment: signal the serve by raising the ring before throwing.
- Skill level: a bigger ring or a shorter throwing distance.
Learning goals
- Throw the ring with a wrist flick to keep it stable.
- Catch with one hand by anticipating the flight path.
- Choose open space on the other side to throw into.
Equipment for a class of 25
- elastic hoop: 6
- net: 4
- cones: 16
Teacher tip
If you don't have ringo rings, small elastic hoops or rubber rings work. Teach the backhand throw, like a flying disc, which is the most accurate.
