Pull the Boat Into the Harbor
A big box full of stuffed animals is a boat tied to a long rope; the whole class pulls gently together to bring it into a harbor made of hoops. Kids build arm and leg strength and learn teamwork: the boat only arrives if everyone pulls together.
How to play
- The teacher ties the rope to the box boat, the stuffed animals climb aboard, and we mark the harbor with hoops across the playground (2 min).
- We all line up on one side of the rope and grab it with both hands, standing with legs a bit apart (2 min).
- With the chant "One, two, three, pull!" we give gentle tugs and take little steps backward (3 min).
- If a stuffed animal falls in the water, we stop, someone rescues it and we keep going (2 min).
- We reach the harbor, unload the animals and load the boat again for another trip (3 min).
Rules
- We all pull the same way; there are no teams here.
- I pull gently and walk backward carefully.
- The rope stays in my hands, never wrapped around my hand or body.
- When the teacher says "Anchor!", I let go of the rope slowly.
Variations
Easier
For 3-year-olds, a light boat (just two stuffed animals) and a short trip.
Standard
For 4-year-olds, a boat with all the class's stuffed animals.
Harder
For 5-year-olds, the boat follows a curvy route between cones and one child steers, calling "Left!" or "Right!"
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: the child pulls the rope seated in their wheelchair with brakes on, or is the captain who says "Go!"
- Hearing impairment: count to three on fingers as well.
- Autism: the child can be the harbor lookout with a hoop, welcoming the boat, if the crowded rope is overwhelming.
Learning goals
- Apply force in a controlled way.
- Coordinate effort with the whole group.
- Feel that the challenge is achieved together.
Equipment for a class of 25
- Long rope: 1
- Large cardboard box: 1
- Stuffed animals: 10
- Hoops: 4
Teacher tip
Put the boat on a mat or flattened cardboard that slides easily so no hard pulling is needed. This isn't tug-of-war: everyone on the same side, and nobody at the very end of the rope.
