Pretend Market Shopping
Children go to the neighborhood market with a pretend cart: they grab fruit from high and low, chase a slippery fish, carry heavy bags uphill and put the groceries away at home. It works on strength, levels in space and imitating everyday actions from their community.
How to play
- We grab our cart and leave home, pushing it down the street, dodging neighbors and stopping at the crosswalk (2 min).
- At the fruit stand: apples from the top crate (on tiptoe), a giant watermelon from the floor (squatting and pulling hard) and tiny grapes with two fingers (3 min).
- At the fish counter, the fish slips out of our hands and flops away across the floor; we chase it crouching down until we catch it (2 min).
- We head home with a heavy bag in each hand, climbing a really steep hill step by step (3 min).
- We put the groceries away: cold food in the bottom of the fridge and cookies on the highest shelf (2 min).
Rules
- I push my cart without crashing into other carts.
- If the groceries are heavy, I use my legs.
- I catch the fish with my hands; I don't dive on top of anyone.
- I put what I bought where it belongs.
Variations
Easier
For 3-year-olds, only the fruit stand and the walk home, with the teacher modeling each action.
Standard
For 4-year-olds, the whole shopping trip in story order.
Harder
For 5-year-olds, the teacher is the shopkeeper and each child asks for what they want using only gestures; the shopkeeper has to guess.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: the wheelchair is the cart, and high and low fruit is reached with the arms.
- Visual impairment: the teacher describes each stand in detail, and the child plays in a pair holding the cart together.
- Less skilled children: carry one bag up the hill, and it's not as heavy.
Learning goals
- Imitate actions from a familiar place in the community.
- Move at different levels: high, low and crouched.
- Show effort and weight with the body.
Teacher tip
Ask what they buy at their local store and add it in (bread, eggs that can't break). It works just as well as a grocery store or farmers market trip.
