Posture Musical Chairs
A cooperative, no-elimination version of musical chairs: when the music stops, the whole class must sit or stand in the correct posture shown on a card. It builds healthy sitting habits, attention, and body control in a fun way.
How to play
- Arrange 25 chairs in a circle facing outward, with space between them, and teach proper sitting: feet flat, back against the backrest, and shoulders relaxed (3 min).
- While the music plays, students move around the circle the way the teacher calls: walking, on tiptoes, side-stepping, or lunging.
- When the music stops, the teacher holds up a card: sit tall, stand up without swinging, share a chair with good posture, or stand tall balancing an imaginary book on your head.
- The whole class has 5 seconds to get into position; if everyone gets it right, the class earns a team point (8 min total).
- Every two rounds, take away one chair so some students share a chair or stand beside it in good posture, with no one ever out.
- Finish with 4 minutes reviewing out loud the keys to good sitting posture at school and at home.
Rules
- No one is out: anyone without a chair holds a tall standing posture.
- No pushing or pulling chairs to get a seat.
- Keep all four chair legs on the floor at all times.
- Wait to see the card before moving to a chair.
Variations
Easier
Don't remove any chairs and use only two cards: sit tall and stand up without swinging.
Standard
A mix of cards with chairs removed gradually and no eliminations.
Harder
Show two cards in a row to chain together, such as sit tall and then stand up without using your hands.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: the student takes part from the wheelchair, adjusting to the posture on each card.
- Hearing impairment: along with stopping the music, flick the lights or raise a hand to signal the stop.
- Fitness level: increase the intensity of the movement between stops for students who need more activity.
Learning goals
- Use proper posture when sitting down and standing up.
- Stay focused and respond to a visual cue.
- Cooperate to reach a shared class goal.
Equipment for a class of 25

Teacher tip
Use sturdy chairs without wheels and leave at least three feet between them. Kids tend to flop into the chair; praise anyone who sits down slowly and with control.
