Plogging Cleanup Jog
In groups of four, students mix easy jogging with squats as they travel around the school grounds picking up litter with gloves. It builds aerobic endurance, proper bending technique, and a commitment to caring for the environment.
How to play
- Explain what plogging is and teach the safe way to bend down: bend the knees, keep the back straight, and pick up the item with a gloved hand (4 min).
- Form 6 groups of 4 or 5 in matching pinnies; each group gets a trash bag, gloves, and an assigned area.
- Groups jog through their area for 15 minutes; whenever they spot litter, they stop, one person squats to pick it up, and it goes in the bag.
- Every 5 minutes the teacher signals, groups rotate who carries the bag, and they reverse direction.
- At the end, groups return to the meeting spot and sort what they collected into three piles: containers, paper, and everything else (6 min).
- Close with 5 minutes of reflection: which type of litter showed up most, where it came from, and what the class could do to cut down on it.
Rules
- Do not pick up glass, needles, batteries, or sharp objects: tell the teacher and mark the spot.
- Always wear gloves and never touch your face during the activity.
- Groups stay together, inside their area, and within sight of the teacher.
- When finished, everyone washes their hands with soap and water.
Variations
Easier
Do it as a brisk walk in a small area of the playground.
Standard
A 15-minute easy jog through assigned areas with stops to pick up litter.
Harder
Add a distance goal by counting laps and an extra exercise, like five squats, for every piece of litter found.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: the student can carry the bag and spot litter, or use a grabber tool.
- Autism: preview with pictures what can and cannot be picked up and give a specific job, such as counting the items.
- Fitness level: each group sets its jogging pace to its slowest member, and anyone wanting more intensity does the extra squats.
Learning goals
- Sustain moderate aerobic effort over an extended time.
- Use safe technique when bending down and standing up.
- Value physical activity as a way to care for the environment.

Teacher tip
Walk the area before class and remove any hazards yourself. Let families know ahead of time and have soap and water ready.
