How to play
- The teacher shows how to hold the spoon with the pine cone: arm out front, eyes on the cone, tiny steps (2 min).
- Free practice: walk slowly around the yard with the cone on the spoon; if it falls, pick it up and keep going (3 min).
- Follow the straight path of cones with the pine cone, then walk back on the outside with an empty spoon (3 min).
- Now the path zigzags between the cones (3 min).
- Each child sets a goal: reach the end without dropping it, or drop it fewer times than before (2 min).
- Set your pine cone on top of a cone at the end like a candle, then walk around to see them all (2 min).
Rules
- I walk, I don't run.
- If my pine cone falls, I pick it up with my hand and start from there.
- I wait until the friend in front moves ahead a bit.
- The spoon only carries the pine cone.
Variations
Easier
For 3-year-olds, they can hold the spoon with both hands and the path is short and straight.
Standard
For 4-year-olds, one hand and the zigzag path.
Harder
For 5-year-olds, step over a stick on the ground or walk around a large rock without dropping the cone.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: travel the path in a wheelchair carrying the pine cone on a tray on the lap.
- Less hand control: use a smaller, flatter cone or a deeper serving spoon.
- Visual impairment: mark the path with a rope on the ground to follow with a foot.
Learning goals
- Balance an object while walking.
- Control speed so the pine cone stays on.
- Set a simple goal and notice improvement.
Equipment for a class of 25
- large pine cones: 25
- wooden spoons: 25
- cones: 12
Teacher tip
Look for pine cones with a flattish base; they stay put better. Set up two or three parallel paths so the lines stay short.
