Pass and Follow Triangles
In groups of four, students pass the ball around a triangle of flat disc cones and, after every pass, run to the spot they passed to. The activity builds passing and catching with the hands, moving after the pass, and staying focused on the play.
How to play
- Set up six triangles of three flat disc cones about 15 feet apart; put a group of 4 at each, two students at the first cone and one at each of the others (2 min).
- Explain the key rule: "pass and follow"; whoever passes follows the ball to the cone they passed to and joins that line (2 min).
- Round 1: chest passes clockwise, walking briskly after each pass (3 min).
- Round 2: same game counterclockwise, with bounce passes (3 min).
- Round 3, challenge: the group counts passes in a row without a drop for 1 minute and tries to beat its score in three attempts (4 min).
- Round 4: add a second ball to the group, starting from a different cone (4 min).
Rules
- After you pass, always move to the cone you passed to.
- Call the receiver's name before passing.
- Pass to the hands, never to the face or too hard.
- If the ball drops, pick it up and keep going without losing a turn.
Variations
Easier
Cones are 10 feet apart and a large foam ball is used.
Standard
A 15-foot triangle with chest or bounce passes and pass-and-follow.
Harder
Play with two balls at once and pass without stopping.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: the student stays at one cone while teammates rotate through the other two.
- Visual impairment: teammates call the student's name before passing, and a ball with bells is used.
- Lower skill level: the student may catch after one bounce and gets a second to get set.
Learning goals
- Pass and catch with the hands accurately.
- Move to the correct spot after passing.
- Stay focused and work with the group without stopping.
Equipment for a class of 25
- playground balls: 12
- flat disc cones: 18
Teacher tip
At first everyone forgets to move after passing; call out "Follow!" until it becomes automatic. If one group gets stuck, take just that group back to round 1.
