Partner Juggling Exchange
Cooperative juggling where two students share the balls: side by side as if they were one juggler, or face to face passing balls. It builds coordination, a shared rhythm, and communication with a partner.
How to play
- Pairs get 3 juggling balls and 2 scarves. Each pair stands 10 feet from the others.
- Step 1, Siamese scarves (4 min): stand shoulder to shoulder with inside arms around each other's backs. Using the free hands, juggle two scarves as if you were one person.
- Step 2, Siamese balls (5 min): same thing with 2 and then 3 balls. Saying 'now' on each throw helps keep the rhythm.
- Step 3, face to face (5 min): 6 feet apart, each holding a ball in the right hand. On three, both toss at the same time to the partner's left hand, who moves it to the right hand.
- Step 4, challenge (4 min): each pair picks the version they handle best and tries for 10 passes or throws in a row without a drop.
- Switch partners (2 min): rotate one spot and teach your trick to your new partner.
Rules
- Call out before every throw.
- Toss in a soft arc at face height, never hard or straight at the body.
- If a ball drops, whoever is closest picks it up and you start again.
- Stay 10 feet from other pairs.
Variations
Easier
Do every step with scarves or balloons.
Standard
Siamese juggling with three balls and the face-to-face exchange.
Harder
Face to face with 4 balls: each juggles two and passes one every other throw.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: both partners sit facing each other closer together, using scarves or soft balls.
- Visual impairment: use large brightly colored balls or ones with a bell and toss from closer.
- Coordination difficulties: stay with step 1 and the one-ball exchange.
Learning goals
- Coordinate throws with a partner while keeping a shared rhythm.
- Throw and catch accurately at short distance.
- Communicate clearly during a cooperative task.
Equipment for a class of 25
- juggling balls: 39
- scarves: 26
Teacher tip
This works great after solo cascade practice; mix pairs of different levels so they help each other, and remind them that saying 'now' out loud is the key to the rhythm.
