Parachute Mushroom Swap
The whole class lifts the parachute together to make a big mushroom, and while the canopy is up, some students switch places by running underneath. Students practice group timing, listening to cues, and making quick decisions about where to go.
How to play
- Students hold the edge of the parachute with both hands, spread out evenly. Practice lifting and lowering it together on a count of three (2 min).
- Mushroom: on three, everyone lifts the canopy, takes one step in, and pulls it down behind their backs while sitting on the edge. Repeat 3 times (3 min).
- With the canopy up, the teacher calls a trait (wearing blue, summer birthday, etc.). Those students let go and switch places by crossing underneath.
- The class earns a team point if every runner reaches an open spot before the parachute touches the ground (5 min).
- Make crossings trickier: holding a partner's hand, bear crawling, or touching the center first (3 min). Final round to beat the team score (2 min).
Rules
- Only the students who were called let go.
- Cross looking ahead, with no pushing, steering around anyone coming toward you.
- Lower the parachute slowly, never onto someone underneath.
- Nobody is out: points belong to the whole class.
Variations
Easier
Call very specific traits so only 3 or 4 students cross each time.
Standard
Everyone who fits the trait crosses, and the class tries to rack up as many points as possible.
Harder
Runners grab a hoop from the center and drop it at their new spot before the canopy comes down.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: cross around the outside edge with a buddy, or be the one who calls the count.
- Autism or shyness: share the traits ahead of time and allow crossing with a trusted partner.
- Fitness level: tired students walk across; students needing more challenge bear crawl.
Learning goals
- Coordinate one shared movement with the whole group.
- Choose an open spot and a safe path quickly.
- Value group success over individual success.
Equipment for a class of 25
- play parachute: 1
Teacher tip
The mushroom works best when everyone steps in at the same time and lifts with straight arms. Make sure no one is holding anything in their hands.
