Paper Tube Dominoes
Together we stand paper towel tubes up in a long path and, when it's done, one finger pushes the first so they all fall like dominoes. It builds precise placing, judging distance by eye and caring for others' work.
How to play
- The teacher uses five tubes to show how one knocks the next if they're just the right distance apart: not too close, not too far (2 min).
- In pairs, build a short path of five tubes and knock it down with one finger (2 min).
- Rebuild the path, placing each tube slowly with two fingers without touching the others (2 min).
- Join all the pairs' paths along a tape line to make the class's giant domino run (3 min).
- Count "three, two, one" and one child pushes the first tube; watch the snake fall in silence (1 min).
- Pick up the tubes two at a time and carry them to the box (2 min).
Rules
- I place tubes carefully without touching my friend's.
- If one falls too early, we stand it up; no big deal.
- Only the child whose turn it is pushes.
Variations
Easier
For 3-year-olds, build short straight paths of four or five tubes, with a mark on the floor for each tube.
Standard
For 4-year-olds, build longer paths joined in a straight line.
Harder
For 5-year-olds, add curves and measure the gap between tubes with one or two finger widths.
Adaptations
- Less dexterity: use wider tubes or paper cups that tip more easily.
- Limited mobility: build their section on a table, linked to the floor by a tube that drops down a ramp.
- Autism: give a heads-up before the knockdown, which can be startling, and let the child be the pusher if they want.
Learning goals
- Place objects precisely, controlling finger force.
- Judge distances by eye.
- Take care of a shared construction.
Equipment for a class of 25
- Paper towel tubes: 50
- Colored tape: 1
Teacher tip
Test the spacing with your tubes ahead of time; every kind falls differently. The usual mistake is spacing them too far apart, so a tape mark for each tube really helps the little ones.
