Packages Landing in the Soft Warehouse
Children are packages arriving on a conveyor belt of mats: they run, jump with both feet onto the thick crash mat and roll sideways off to the "truck." It links a short run, a two-foot takeoff, a landing and a roll.
How to play
- Make the conveyor belt with mats in a row, the crash mat at the end and another mat beside it as the "truck"; a cone marks the takeoff spot (2 min).
- Practice the takeoff: three little running steps and a jump with both feet together, no crash mat yet (2 min).
- Taking turns, each package jogs, jumps at the cone and lands on the crash mat on feet or bottom (3 min).
- After landing, the package rolls sideways to the truck (3 min).
- The teacher calls what kind of package we are: heavy (strong jump) or fragile (soft jump, quiet landing) (2 min).
- Close the warehouse: everyone lies on the crash mat and the truck drives away (1 min).
Rules
- Go when the package before you is in the truck.
- Jump with both feet from the cone.
- Jog gently, not full speed.
Variations
Easier
For 3-year-olds, no run: walk to the cone, jump onto the crash mat and crawl to the truck.
Standard
For 4-year-olds, a three-step run, jump and roll to the truck.
Harder
For 5-year-olds, they switch between heavy and fragile on their own.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: be the delivery driver who receives packages at the truck and gives the start signal, or slide onto the crash mat with help.
- Hearing impairment: start with a tap on the shoulder and show the package type with a card.
- Autism: keep the same line and starting order each round.
Learning goals
- Link a run, a two-foot jump and a landing.
- Roll to leave the landing area.
- Adjust jumping force.
Equipment for a class of 25
- Thick crash mat: 1
- Mats: 6
- Cones: 4
Teacher tip
Place the cone one step from the crash mat so no one takes off from too far. Watch that the child rolling to the truck doesn't cross paths with the one landing.
