One-Wall Handball with a Soft Ball
Group wall game where a soft ball is struck with the palm against the wall in a set turn order, with a waiting line that rotates in nonstop. Students practice hitting with both hands, hand-eye coordination and orderly rotation.
How to play
- Mark 5 wall courts 10 ft wide and, in front of each, a 13 x 16 ft area with cones. Groups of 5: three inside and two in line by the side cone (3 min).
- Individual practice for 2 minutes: toss the ball at the wall and hit it with your palm after a bounce, alternating hands.
- Game: the three inside hit in a set order (1, 2, 3, 1…) with one bounce on the ground. Whoever misses goes to the line, and the first waiting player enters at the end of the order.
- Each player scores 1 point per good hit and chases a personal best. Play for 7 minutes.
- Second round of 6 minutes: serves use the non-dominant hand. Wrap up by discussing which hand improved most (2 min).
Rules
- Hit with the palm or closed fingers, never a fist.
- One bounce before the hit, and keep the order: skip your turn and you lose your spot.
- Safety: the line waits behind the cone, and nobody walks toward the wall while someone is hitting.
Variations
Easier
Allow two bounces and two-hand hits.
Standard
One bounce and one-hand hits in a set order.
Harder
Volley with no bounce, or hit a band marked on the wall with chalk.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: a personal zone with two bounces allowed, and the student never rotates out.
- Autism or shyness: show the hitting order with numbers painted on the ground and warn before each change.
- Fitness level: a bigger foam ball for students with less coordination.
Learning goals
- Strike the ball against the wall with the palm of either hand.
- Improve hand-eye coordination when tracking a rebound.
- Follow the turn order and the group rotation.
Equipment for a class of 25
- soft ball: 10
- chalk: 5
- cones: 20
Teacher tip
Tennis balls and hard rubber balls hurt hands, so use foam or hollow rubber. If the line grows, open another wall court so nobody waits more than a minute.
