Numbers Soccer: Uneven Teams
Two numbered teams wait on their end lines, and the teacher calls numbers to send players in, often in uneven groups (2v1, 3v2). Students practice reacting quickly, using an overload, and defending while outnumbered in short, intense bursts of play.
How to play
- Set up two 65 x 50 ft fields with a small goal at each end; on each field, form two teams of 6 in pinnies, sitting on their end lines and numbered 1 to 6 (3 min).
- The teacher rolls a ball to the middle and calls numbers, such as "Blue 3 and 5, only Red 2!"; the players called run in to play.
- Each play lasts up to 20 seconds, or until a goal or the ball goes out; then players return to their spots.
- Players waiting on the end line may kick the ball back in if it reaches them, acting as support, but can't enter the field.
- Make quick calls in a row, mixing situations (1v1, 2v1, 3v2, 3v3), and switch opponents halfway through (10 min).
- Finish by asking what the team with the extra player did to make it count (3 min).
Rules
- Only called numbers play; everyone else stays out.
- No tackling from behind and no slide tackles.
- Goals only count below the waist.
- Safety: players return to the line along the sideline to avoid the next group running in.
Variations
Easier
Mostly call clear overloads (2v1, 3v1).
Standard
Mix even and uneven situations with 20-second plays.
Harder
An outnumbered team that keeps a clean sheet earns 2 points.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: be a fixed sideline support player who joins every call.
- Hearing impairment: show numbers on large cards as well as calling them out.
- Fitness level: call students who need it less often, or give them a bigger overload.
Learning goals
- React quickly to a signal.
- Use a numbers advantage on offense.
- Defend in an organized way when outnumbered.

Teacher tip
Keep a mental count of who has gone in so everyone gets equal playing time. Keep balls ready next to you so the pace never drops.
