Now? Not Yet!
The teacher explains a simple task (go to a hoop, jump inside) but nobody moves until they hear the day's “go” word; if someone takes off early, everyone laughs and starts over. It builds waiting through directions, impulse control and listening before playing.

How to play
- Spread hoops on the floor and choose the day's go word with the children, for example “pancakes!” (1 min).
- Give a task: “We're going to a red hoop to jump inside…” and ask “Now?” Everyone answers “Not yet!” and waits (2 min).
- Say tricky similar words (“pajamas,” “pumpkins”) until you say the real one and everyone goes (3 min).
- Change the task: crawl to a blue hoop, sit in a hoop with a friend, step through two hoops (2 min).
- To finish, the task is to return to the circle and sit, and a child says the go word (2 min).
Rules
- While the teacher explains, feet stay glued.
- We only go on today's word.
- If someone goes early, it's okay: everyone comes back and we laugh.
Variations
Easier
For 3-year-olds, no trick words and one-step tasks.
Standard
For 4-year-olds, a few trick words and two-step tasks.
Harder
For 5-year-olds, three-step tasks and very similar trick words; a child plays teacher.
Adaptations
- Hearing impairment: pair the go word with a specific gesture (thumbs up).
- Autism: write or draw the go word on a card the teacher holds up.
- Limited mobility: the task becomes reaching the nearest hoop or touching it with a hand.
Learning goals
- Wait for the signal before acting.
- Listen to the whole instruction.
- Follow one- to three-step movement directions.
Equipment for a class of 25
- Hula hoops: 15
Teacher tip
This game trains the habit of listening before running off, which pays off in every class. Never put out the child who goes early; the whole group comes back together.
