Nature Scavenger Bingo
In groups of four, students explore a nearby green space or the school grounds looking for natural items on a bingo card, such as a leaf with jagged edges or an insect. It builds outdoor observation, active travel, and respect for the environment.
How to play
- Before class, make 4 x 4 bingo cards with nature and observation items: smooth stone, nest, yellow flower, bird call, footprint, rough bark.
- Explain the golden rule: look, don't pick; items are pointed out and checked off, never collected if alive (3 min).
- Form groups of 4 wearing the same color pinnies and give each group a different starting area within the boundaries.
- Groups walk or jog through the area and mark a square when everyone in the group sees the item; the teacher circulates to verify (15 min).
- Groups call out 'line' when they complete a row and 'bingo' when they fill the card, but they keep searching until the whistle.
- Bring everyone together for 5 minutes to share discoveries and which signs show the environment is healthy or needs care.
Rules
- Do not pick plants or bother animals; just observe.
- Groups stay together inside the marked area and always within sight of the teacher.
- Do not touch mushrooms, berries, trash, or animals, and tell the teacher if you find anything dangerous.
- A square only counts if the whole group has seen the item.
Variations
Easier
Use 3 x 3 cards with pictures instead of words and items that are very easy to find.
Standard
4 x 4 cards with natural items, sounds, and textures to spot as a group.
Harder
Add squares that require measuring or counting, like a tree four people can't wrap their arms around or three different kinds of leaves.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: choose an area with firm paths and let the group bring back descriptions or sketches of hard-to-reach items.
- Visual impairment: include squares for sounds, smells, and textures so the student can take full part.
- Fitness level: higher-energy groups can get larger search areas that are farther away.
Learning goals
- Observe and identify natural features in the local environment.
- Travel safely as a group through a natural space.
- Show respect and care for the environment.

Teacher tip
Walk the area the day before to remove hazardous trash and match the squares to what is actually there. If you leave campus, confirm permission slips and bring a first aid kit.
