My Breath Moves the Puppet
In pairs, one child is a still puppet and the other gently blows toward one body part (hand, arm, head), which moves as if the air were pushing it. It builds body awareness, gentle blowing, and paying attention to a partner.
How to play
- The teacher is the puppet and a child blows on the teacher's hand: the hand floats up; blows on the head: the head tilts slowly (2 min).
- In pairs: the puppet stands still like a statue, and the blower blows from one step away toward a body part (3 min).
- A soft puff means a small movement; a long breath means the body part keeps moving until the air runs out (2 min).
- They switch roles (3 min).
- To finish, the blower blows "from toes to head" and the whole puppet wakes up, dances for a moment, and then holds still (2 min).
Rules
- I blow from a distance, never in someone's face.
- The puppet only moves when blown on.
- I move slowly, as if the air were carrying me.
- When the teacher says so, we switch.
Variations
Easier
For 3-year-olds, only hands and arms, and the teacher calls out which part to blow.
Standard
For 4-year-olds, any body part with short or long breaths.
Harder
For 5-year-olds, the puppet closes their eyes and guesses where the air is coming from.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: as the puppet, the child moves what they can from the chair, and as the blower they join in fully.
- Autism: the child can blow on a stuffed-animal puppet they move themselves if they'd rather not be blown on.
- Hearing impairment: before blowing, the blower points to the body part so the puppet knows.
Learning goals
- Connect how long they blow with how they move.
- Become aware of body parts.
- Play gently and respectfully with a partner.
Teacher tip
Insist on the one-step distance and no blowing in faces; if colds are going around, have them blow only on hands and arms. Kids love it when the teacher plays the puppet and hams it up.
